Special Olympics Howard County
Interested in volunteering? Want to coach and mentor athletes with intellectual disabilities? Consider volunteering for Special Olympics Howard County! To volunteer you must be at least 14 years old or a freshman in high school. To apply for a volunteer position, visit www.somdhc.org and complete a Volunteer Application. You must also complete an online Protective Behaviors Course, which can be found on the Volunteer page, and attend a Volunteer Orientation class. Pre-registration for the latter class is required by sending an email to Janet Larrimore, at JanetandWalter@comcast.net.
Howard County NAACP Youth Council
The youth council holds monthly meetings every third Monday of the month at 6:00 PM at the Ridgely’s Run Community Center, 8400 Mission Road, Jessup MD 20794. They sponsor Health Fairs, Juvenile Justice Programs, Voter Registration Programs, along with many other events. Voices for Change (V4C) is coordinated by the Howard County Government’s Office of Children’s Services, but receives major sponsorship from the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, the Columbia Association Youth & Teen Center, and the Howard County Public School System.
Voices for Change is made up of members of each Howard County high school, a handful of middle schools, and Glenelg Country School. The group meets twice a month on Tuesdays from 5:00-7:00 at the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks Headquarters Building. Dinner is provided at each of these meetings. V4C creates a welcoming, friendly environment for all members, old and new. To join, you must be a Howard County resident in at least the eighth grade.

Teen volunteers develop new skills and gain practical experience as well as learn about the HCLS educational mission and vision. We are looking for students who are mature, dependable, polite, and love HCLS. Service Learning Hours may be available for students who volunteer. Students are responsible for checking with their school to verify that their hours will qualify.
